31 years ago on this day South Africa returned to international cricket after a 21 year ban by the ICC. They played their 1st ODI against India at Eden Gardens. South Africa was led by the late great Clive Rice while India was led by Mohammad Azharuddin. Batting first South Africa posted 177/8 in 47 overs & Kepler Wessels became the first half centurion for South Africa scoring 50 runs.
During the Indian reply Allan Donald announced his arrival to international cricket becoming the first South African to pick up an ODI fifer with figures of 5 for 29. But it wasn’t enough to stop India from reaching the target with 3 wickets & 38 balls to spare as Sachin Tendulkar scored 62 runs & Pravin Amre scored 55 runs building the Indian innings. Both Donald & Sachin were awarded as players of the match.
